03SUMMARY
The HP Kittyhawk C3013A is a 1.3-inch hard disk drive with a capacity of 21.4 MB and an AT (IDE) interface, in a case of about 50.8 × 36.5 × 10.5 mm that weighs around 28 g. This example is a 'NOT FOR RESALE' unit with 'HP C3013' on its lid and AT&T, Cirrus Logic CL-SH364 and Mitsubishi chips on the circuit board underneath. It comes with its black anti-static pouch and its box, which carries an Arrow Electronics stock label reading 'KITTYHAWK 1.3" 21.4MB AT', dated 1993, and a 22 December 1992 date stamp.
Announced by Hewlett-Packard in June 1992, the Kittyhawk was the smallest hard disk drive on the market at its launch. HP built it for handheld and pen computers and specified it to survive a 3-foot (0.9 m) drop onto concrete while running, protected by a built-in accelerometer. A 42 MB version, the Kittyhawk II, followed. The handheld market grew more slowly than HP expected; the drive was discontinued in September 1994, and HP closed its disk memory division two years later.
