03SUMMARY
The Intel 4040 is an improved version of the Intel 4004, the world's first single-chip microprocessor. Introduced in 1974, the 4040 maintained the 4-bit architecture of its predecessor but offered several enhancements. These improvements included an increased instruction set of 60 instructions (up from 46), an expanded program memory address space of 8 KB (from 4 KB), and an extended number of general-purpose registers (8 registers and 8 pairs of registers, compared to 16 registers on the 4004). The 4040 also introduced interrupt capabilities and support for larger memory chips (4201 RAM and 4308 ROM). It was often paired with the 4207 General Purpose Byte Output Port, 4209 General Purpose Byte Input Port, and 4211 General Purpose Byte Input/Output Port chips. The 4040 found applications in devices like traffic light controllers, test equipment, and scientific instruments, serving as an important evolutionary step in microcomputer design.
